Seriously, how many times have you seen a headline like, ‘XYNGULAR – The Next Billion Dollar Company,’ I’m guessing, far too often.

Headlines like this are usually written by someone who refers to himself/herself as a ‘Guru,’ ‘Mentor,’ ‘Coach’ or even a ‘Saviour’ or ‘Jedi Knight.’ I’m a big fan of enthusiastic marketing, but, really, this particular hyperbole has become laughable. I have a Chinese Canadian friend, who lives here in Vancouver. In the last year, I’ve received no less than ten solicitations from him that contained the words ‘next billion dollar network marketing company;’ interestingly, all ten invitations were for different companies. I don’t think there have been ten, billion-dollar-MLMs in the last sixty years.

I’ll admit, I’ve spent my life calming people down, not getting them excited, but does the phrase ‘next billion dollar company’ really get people excited? My hunch is that it produces unrealistic expectations and those expectations lead to frustration and ultimately to attrition.

XYNGULAR is doing remarkably well for a ground-floor network marketing company, but I don’t believe there’s anyone anywhere that can credibly predict the future. I expect to be with XYNGULAR for decades, so I will obviously be delighted if it becomes a billion dollar company; time will tell.

BTW, I think network marketers really are some of the world’s most optimistic people, but, I’ll admit, I’ve also met a few liars. FYI, I also met more than a few liars in the medical profession.

Reality check: Mr. Heavy Hitter did what he does best, he got Bob wound up and excited. Ask yourself, is there actually a reason to be excited? Have a look at the following diagram, if you join Bob, you’re the little brown guy. You are in Mr. Heavy Hitter’s power leg, but you’re on the inside of an inside leg. The reality is that it’s very unlikely that you will ever see any spillover from Mr. Heavy Hitter. If you’ve already joined Bob, you might be feeling like you’ve just been hung out to dry?

OK, what are your options?

Options:

1. Desert your friend Bob, approach Mr. Heavy Hitter’s sponsor directly and ask to be placed on the outside of his power leg. What about poor Bob?
2. Go for it, recognizing that the network marketing maxim, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” is correct.
3. Avoid binary compensation plans, there’s something better. Binary plans often sizzle and then fizzle. Avoid hybrid binary compensation plans because almost all binaries these days are hybrids and they share the same problems.
