For the benefit of my North American readers the Slovak Republic is a modern European country with a population of over five million people and an area of about 49,000 square kilometres (19,000 square miles). Although thoroughly modern, Slovakia has a rural feel with magnificent mountains, lakes and valleys. Slovaks are very well educated, enjoy a rich cultural life and have one of the fastest growing economies in the European Union.

Fellow Canadian NHL fans will recognize many Slovak names including Stan Mikita, Peter Stastny, Pavol Demitra, Miroslav Satan, Marian Hossa, Marian Gaborik and many others. For fellow Vancouverites Pavol Dimitra is a hometown favourite.
